When driving from Georgia to Greece via Turkey, your vehicle must be insured for both parts of the route — Turkey and Greece. There are several ways to arrange this. The simplest option is a Green Card that covers both Turkey (TR) and Greece (GR). Alternatively, you can purchase separate border insurance for Turkey and a separate policy valid throughout the European Economic Area, including Greece. Another option is to have a Green Card covering Turkey (TR) only and separate border insurance for Greece. If required, DEDA can also arrange a Green Card covering both Turkey and European countries, although this option is usually more expensive.

What to Check Before You Travel

  • The vehicle is registered in Georgia.
  • The planned route is Georgia — Turkey — Greece.
  • Turkey (TR) is not excluded from the Green Card coverage.
  • Greece (GR) is not excluded from your Green Card or from the insurance policy we arrange for you.
  • The insurance remains valid for the entire period you will be driving in Turkey and Greece.
  • The registration number, VIN, and other vehicle details shown on the insurance documents match the vehicle registration certificate.
  • IMPORTANT: If you purchase the policy through us, your registration plate must contain no more than 8 characters and must not include the letter “Q”.

How to Check Your Insurance Before You Travel

  4. 04If GR coverage is missing, you can arrange insurance through us. It will be valid when entering Greece and throughout your stay in Greece and the countries of the European Economic Area.

Cost of Insurance for the Route

The price depends on the type of vehicle and the insurance period. The minimum insurance period is 30 days. The package for a passenger car costs PLN 158. This includes arranging a border insurance policy valid in Greece and throughout the EEA territory covered by the policy.

Insurance Validity Period

Your insurance must remain continuously valid for the entire time the vehicle is in each country along the route. For Turkey, coverage must be valid from the moment you enter the country until you leave it. For Greece, it must be valid from the moment you enter Greece and throughout your planned stay. If Polish OC graniczne border insurance is arranged for the EEA, the minimum policy period is 30 days. Polish OC graniczne does not replace the insurance required for driving in Turkey.

TR is the international Green Card code for Turkey, while GR is the code for Greece. Before traveling, make sure the relevant codes appear on your insurance certificates and are not excluded from coverage.
Can I travel to Greece if GR is covered but TR is excluded?+
Insurance covering GR may provide the required cover for Greece, but you will still need separate insurance valid in Turkey for the Turkish part of the journey.
Is TR coverage enough if GR is excluded?+
No. TR coverage applies to Turkey only. To enter and drive in Greece, you must also have valid third-party liability insurance covering Greece.
Does Polish OC graniczne cover Turkey?+
No. Polish OC graniczne is intended for the European Economic Area and the territory specified in the policy. Turkey is outside that territorial scope, so separate valid insurance is required for the Turkish part of the journey.
Can Polish OC graniczne replace a Green Card for the entire Georgia — Turkey — Greece route?+
No. Polish OC graniczne does not provide the insurance required for driving in Turkey. If you are traveling from Georgia to Greece via Turkey, you must arrange separate coverage for the Turkish part of the route.
What should I check before entering Greece?+
Make sure your insurance is valid on the date you enter Greece, that Greece is included in the territorial coverage, and that the vehicle details match the registration certificate.
